This Week We’re Unpacking: Intersectional Feminism
Monday March 1st kicked off Women's History Month, which honors the contributions of women in America. As I reflected on what I wanted to share with you, I thought it would be appropriate to discuss Intersectional Feminism, a term coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw.
Intersectional Feminism explains how the feminist movement can be more inclusive of women BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ , and persons with disabilities.
Intersectional Feminism:
What it is: Traditional historical feminism advocated for women's rights and gender equality. Intersectional feminism explains how women's overlapping identities (race, class, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation) impact how we experience oppression and discrimination.
Why You Should Care: Intersectional Feminism enables minority groups to enter into the conversation so that the majority can also advocate on our behalf. For far too long, the traditional feminist narrative put whiteness at the center.
How to Show up as an Ally: If you are a manager, founder, or community leader make sure that when you discuss and building programming around Women’s History Month, you are being inclusive of all women. As you honor women's history month, I challenge you to view it with an intersectional lens. Explore all of the ways you can support women from the BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and persons with disabilities through your actions, donations, and time.
As always, we will continue to provide actionable tips and resources here on Inclusion Unpacked. Thank you for your commitment to allyship and for being part of this community!
