Inclusion Unpacked: Post MLK Day Action Items
If you happened to forget to discuss MLK Day within your community or work environment, here is what you can do today
Welcome to the second issue of Inclusion Unpacked. Your weekly newsletter where we unpack diversity topics to help female founders and community leaders better understand how to navigate the current climate.
This Week We’re Unpacking: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's Legacy.
Yesterday was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in the United States. For some, the day was spent leisurely enjoying the long weekend or casually sharing an MLK meme without any active observance of the meaning of the holiday. As a collective, we don't do enough to honor his legacy.
As always, if you find this useful, please share this newsletter with your community. If you want to support my work, you can Venmo a donation @victoriapaige2
If you happened to forget to discuss MLK Day within your community or work environment, here is what you can do today:
Understand and share what Dr. King meant to you. Most know that Dr. King was a civil rights leader, humanitarian, and activist who gave the powerful and widely known "I Have a Dream" speech. Please don't leave your knowledge of him to that one speech. Educate yourself on his vast array of other lessons and writings and share with your community how that impacts you today. Read the action items below as a guide.
Remember, this is recent history. If Dr. King were alive today, he would be 92. His work is recent history. However, many see Dr. King as a distant historical figure because of the black and white photos shared amongst the media. What he fought for is still present today. Black people and people of color are still marching for our lives to be considered equal. Know that the fight isn't over.
If you don’t know much about Dr. King, it’s okay to begin educating yourself now. Many people get lost in the myriad of articles, movies, and books about his life that it becomes difficult to truly understand who the person is and what they stood for. I put together three action items below to get you started.
Post MLK Day Action Items for Female Founders & Community Leaders
What to Watch: I challenge you to watch the movie "Selma" as it provides an excellent historical reference to his life.
Who to Follow: I was fortunate enough to meet Dr. Bernice King (MLK's daughter) a couple of years ago. She is committed to amplifying her father's legacy and is a fierce advocate for women and girls everywhere.
What to Post: It is not enough to share a picture of Dr. King and move on. Immerse yourself in his work and understand where you fit into that. Ask yourself, how does his advocacy make you feel? What have you learned from him? Then share what you have learned from MLK that potentially translates to your brand and your company.
